Chapter Nine

Anique Foxe hadn’t expected it to be so crowded in here. After all, Crest Hill was a good deal smaller than most other towns she’d visited, and so was the population. Plus, with the epidemic that now threatened to overwhelm the area, she’d figured most people would choose to stay home rather than sit in a sleazy bar, drinking themselves into a stupor while listening to overly loud, poorly selected music and raucous laughter. Funny enough, though, passing the evening that way was right up her alley tonight. She was content to sit on the somewhat uncomfortable barstool, nursing a dry Martini and people watching. Not only did it have a surprisingly calming effect on her strung-out nerves, but it also helped take her mind off the mess that had been plaguing her the past few days.

Thorn didn’t want her. He wasn’t the least bit interested in her the way she was interested in him. She’d spent the last five years hung up on a man that saw her only as a little sister. That realization had hit her with the force of a freight train. It had completely gutted her, as if he’d ripped her heart out of her chest with his bare hands. Oh God, the memory of how he’d pushed her away still left the bitter taste of gall in her mouth, making her want to spit every five minutes. Every time she recalled how she had thrown herself at him only to have him push her aside like an annoying pest, hot tears stung the back of her eyes and threatened to flow like a stream of lava down her cheeks.

He’d been her friend from the very first day Jazmyn had taken her home from the shelter where she’d been taken after her village had burnt down and only a few survivors remained. They’d had so many things obviously in common from the start—their sense of humor and knack for pulling pranks, their love of sports and video games, their competitive nature. They had just clicked, just like that. No awkward getting-to-know-you, no weird adopted-child resentment, nothing like that. In no time they became “Thorn and Nique,” two peas in a pod. He taught her how to fight and defended her against the other guys in the house when they decided to tease her mercilessly. She understood when he went to that dark, bitter place in his mind and needed to escape everyone and lose himself in his artwork to feel whole again. She’d been the recipient of many of those drawings in the aftermath of the release of his pent-up rage. Yes, she’d hero-worshipped him all her teenage years, and then somewhere along the line, those feelings had blossomed into what she was positive was love. Unrequited love.
